Mental Health vs. Emotional Health: Understanding the Difference

When we talk about overall well-being, the terms ‘mental health’ and ‘emotional health’ are often used interchangeably. However, while they are closely related, they aren’t quite the same. Understanding the distinction is crucial for seeking the right kind of help and support.

Mental health encompasses our psychological state, which includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act as we cope with life. On the other hand, emotional health is specifically related to our ability to express emotions based on the circumstances we are in. It’s about experiencing the correct emotions at the correct times, and it’s an important component of mental health.

Good mental health is when you have the cognitive and psychological resources to live your life to the fullest. Good emotional health is more about the ability to manage and express the emotions that arise from what life throws at you. They are two sides of the same coin—both need to be looked after and nurtured.

For those times when the weight of your emotions feels too heavy to manage, or when your thoughts seem to spiral beyond your control, there is help.
